Johnny Cueto struggles in return to Cincinnati

Former Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto had pitched in Cincinnati for 7 1/2 seasons, so naturally, it was a different feeling seeing him pitch at the Great American Ballpark… for another team.

Monday night’s game featured Cueto and the San Francisco Giants take on the Reds.

And the reaction to his return?

Cheers.

Cueto said it “felt great to hear the support.” Not too long afterwards, a majority of those same fans who cheered him had begun taunting him by turning his surname into a derisive sing-song chant.

According to the veteran pitcher, it didn’t bother him.

“It’s normal,” Cueto said. “I understand it. Things didn’t come out the way I wanted them to.”

Over five innings of work, he did what he does best: striking out batters. He had struck out eight of them over the course of five innings, before being taken out of the game.

The Giants eventually won the game 9-6.
